Personally, I used this product for a long time and found it to be very good. I bought it in vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry flavors, and I found the chocolate flavor to be the best. This doesn't mean it tasted great, but it was tolerable enough for shakes, as well as for adding to other foods.
It mixed well enough, also. I can't remember ever having any large clumping problems. However, I do shake up my protein very thoroughly. You probably want to do the same.
The nutritional information was standard for whey concentrate. For every 25 grams of protein, there were about 2 grams of fat and 3 grams of carbs. This is just fine for any cheap whey protein.
The price was very good, and my main reason for purchasing the Higher Power brand. It was 25-30 dollars for a 5 pound container, which is about 75 servings. If you're on an extremely tight budget, this is probably the protein of choice.
Optimum Nutrition Whey Protein
This is my current favorite product. The whey protein review of the Optimum Nutrition protein all over the internet will show that this is very popular for other people, as well. Though not quite as cheap as Higher Power protein, it has an excellent mix of price, taste, and mixability.
First of all, this whey protein is extremely easy to mix well. I've found that you don't even need a shaker. It is instantized, which means that you can simply stir it into solution with a spoon, similar to hot chocolate mix.
The taste is also very good. I pretty much always buy the chocolate variety, but pretty much every flavor of this product has gotten good whey protein reviews.
The price, though more than Higher Power, is still good. I usually pay about 80 dollars for a 10 pound bag. As long as you buy in bulk like that, the prices you find will be very affordable.
Most Store-Bought Whey Protein
Without going into detail about every store-bought brand of whey protein, most of them are absolutely horrible. Their nutritional profile is usually fine, with about 2-3 grams of carbs and fats per 25 grams of protein, but the taste is worse than rancid.
Every protein I have bought from a store had a similarly bitter, disgusting flavor that really forced me to gulp down the shake as quickly as possible. I don't know what it is about the sweeteners that these companies use, but they are the worst I have ever tasted.
